In March, the Orem Library Book Club will be reading Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller. This memoir takes an unflinching look at Fuller’s growing-up years in Africa, where her British family tries to establish a successful farm. The vagaries of civil war, segregation, and nations attempting to form post-colonial identities rage around them as they try to create their life in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and then Zambia. Avoiding sentimentality, the book examines troubling issues while still conveying the strength of family and the beauty of Africa.
