Volunteers serve an important role in the Orem Public Library’s mission to “inspire lifelong learning, create enriching opportunities, and strengthen our communities.”
Application Process
- Look through the available volunteer positions, and follow the link included to apply to any positions that interest you.
- Fill out and submit the application form.
- A library staff member will reach out when your application is approved, and send you the City of Orem’s Volunteer Application, and a Criminal Background Investigation and Waiver form. Background checks are required for all prospective volunteers aged 18 years and older.
- When your applications have been approved by City of Orem Human Resources, a staff member will reach out to you with information about orientation, training, and getting started.

Open Volunteer Positions
The Orem Public Library is currently looking for people interested in volunteering in an ongoing basis in the roles below. We are unable to accommodate court ordered community service, or temporary service hours for school requirements or other projects.

Acquisitions Tech
Responsibilities: Acquisitions techs assist library staff by stocking the library’s used book sale, sorting donated items, and processing discarded library materials. Preferred hours are 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Monday through Friday, and afternoons from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Monday through Thursday.
Perks: All library volunteers receive free film checkouts from the Orem Public Library’s extensive film collection. Fees on late items are also waived for library volunteers. In addition, docents will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.
Schedule: Flexible schedule. Commitment of 5-10 hours per month as needed.
Art Gallery Docent
Responsibilities: Docents will cover the Orem Library Hall Gallery information booth, give tours of Library Hall, assist with hanging and taking down art exhibitions, and making title cards and other gallery information. Must have a love of art and museums, and a willingness to share that love with community members.

Audio/Visual Assistant
Responsibilities: A/V Assistants will help library A/V technicians run audio and video for library and City of Orem events in the Orem Library Hall, as well as other city facilities such as the Stage at City Center Park. Events include library programs, City of Orem events, meetings, and trainings, Orem’s summer concert series, as well as rental use of Orem Library Hall. Some knowledge of basic A/V practices preferred, as well as an interest in event production, and a willingness to learn.

Blogger
Responsibilities: Do you love to read? Watch movies? Attend library programs and events? The Orem Public Library is looking for volunteers to create content for Just Browsing, the library’s blog. The purpose of the blog is to connect community members with Orem Library materials and resources. Content includes book lists, movie lists, and music lists, features on upcoming library programs and events, as well as book reviews and recommendations.
Perks: All library volunteers receive free film checkouts from the Orem Public Library’s extensive film collection. Fees on late items are also waived for library volunteers. In addition, bloggers will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Chess Master
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for volunteers to host its monthly chess club. Chess masters will set up before meetups, set up and put away boards and pieces, as well as help any attendees learn how to play or improve their game. Basic knowledge of chess required.
Perks: All library volunteers receive free film checkouts from the Orem Public Library’s extensive film collection. Fees on late items are also waived for library volunteers. In addition, chess masters will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Collection Maintenance Technician
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for volunteers to help mend books, remove weeded items, as well as helping to maintain the library’s used book sale.
Perks: All library volunteers receive free film checkouts from the Orem Public Library’s extensive film collection. Fees on late items are also waived for library volunteers. In addition, collection maintenance technicians will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Event Host Assistant
Responsibilities: Event Host Assistants will work with library staff to set up, host, and take down events. Host Assistants will greet attendees, assist performers, act as ushers, handout programs, and help with other duties as assigned to produce library and City of Orem

Game Master/ DM
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for volunteers to host its monthly game meetups and clubs. Makerspace Assistant
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for makers, artists, crafters, and other creatives to assist patrons in the library’s Makerspace. The Makerspace gives public access to creative tools such as 3D printers, video, photography, and audio recording equipment, creative software, sewing machines, and much more. General skills in one or more of these areas is required, as well as a willingness to learn and share with library patrons.

In addition, Makerspace assistants will have access to Makerspace tools and resources, as well as exclusive access to VIP performances and events, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.
Orem PERC
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for volunteers to assist in the Parent Education Resource Center. PERC is a special library collection of games, puzzles, toys, and other educational resources for children and families. PERC volunteers will be responsible for assisting library patrons, checking materials in and out, and assisting with PERC programs and events.

In addition, PERC volunteers will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, as well as Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Orem Teen Library Council
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for teens to assist with planning and preparing teen programs. Council members will be responsible for decorating and maintaining the Teen Zone, writing recommendations about library items for teen patrons, and assisting with other library programs and events.
Perks: Teen Library Council members will be involved behind-the-scenes on library events and programs, as well as gain leadership and service experience that look great on future college and job applications. Council members will receive letters of recommendation from the OTLC Advisor and other librarians for college and job applications. All library volunteers receive free film checkouts from the Orem Public Library’s extensive film collection. Fees on late items are also waived for library volunteers. In addition, council members will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, as well as Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.
Schedule: Flexible schedule. Commitment of 22 hours per academic year.
Projectionist
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for film buffs to host public film screenings in the library. Duties will include starting and stopping films in the library’s Media Auditorium and Ashton Auditorium, troubleshooting minor A/V issues, and assisting library patrons before, during, and after film screenings. May also give film reviews on the library’s blog, Just Browsing. Basic knowledge of DVD and Bluray players, video projectors, and audio systems preferred.

In addition, projectionists will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, as well as private film screenings for family and friends, and receive Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Reviewer
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for avid readers to assist with book reviews, assist with library displays, and participate on award committees such as the Utah Beehive Award. Reviewers may also provide reviews and booklists on the library’s blog, Just Browsing.

In addition, reviewers will have exclusive access to VIP performances and events, as well as Orem Public Library and City of Orem swag and clothing.

Stage Crew
Responsibilities: The Orem Public Library is looking for crew members to help produce library, City of Orem, and community events in the Orem Library Hall. Events include concerts, theater, author readings, City of Orem events, meetings, and performances. Some knowledge of basic stage and theater practices preferred, as well as an interest in event production, and a willingness to learn.
